BTC Holds $78.5K, Greed Index Hits 65 — But Altcoin Perps Are Bleeding

VVWritten & audited by Vlad Ventura

Bitcoin is doing the opposite of exciting right now, parked at $78,545 with a barely-there 0.02% move, and that calm is masking a much noisier picture underneath. The Fear & Greed Index just ticked up to 65 — squarely in 'Greed' territory — even as derivatives data across the altcoin complex shows some of the sharpest 24-hour drawdowns of the week.

Majors Are Holding, Mostly

On spot, the picture looks orderly. ETH is up 0.9% to $2,465.02 after swinging between $2,414.88 and $2,485.96. BNB leads the majors at +1.2% to $702.80, SOL is up 0.4% to $97.03, and even DOGE is green at +0.9%, trading at $0.0865. BTC itself spent the session boxed between $77,867.79 and $79,566.67 without committing to a direction. XRP is the outlier among the majors, slipping 1.4% to $1.4139 after tagging a high of $1.4834.

The Perp Market Tells a Rougher Story

Where it gets interesting is the derivatives tape. Bybit's 24-hour percentage figures for the same assets are considerably uglier than the spot numbers suggest. XRP's perpetual is down 4.428% on the day, more than three times the spot move. Beyond the large caps, the damage is concentrated in mid-cap alts: INJ is off 7.81%, JTO down 6.463%, SUI down 5.323%, APT down 5.264%, JTO's Solana-ecosystem peer SUI joining APT in the red column, and HBAR, TIA, and NEAR all down between 3.3% and 4.4%. Even BTC and ETH perps show mild declines of -0.615% and -0.543% respectively over the same window — a reminder that the spot 'up day' narrative and the derivatives-market read don't always agree.

The funding rate tell: Despite red candles across most of the altcoin board, funding rates on names like XRP, AVAX, HBAR, SUI, APT, LINK, and NEAR remain positive — meaning leveraged longs are still paying to stay in these trades. That's a classic signature of stubborn bullish positioning into a pullback. TRX (-0.000257) and ETH (-0.000001) are the rare exceptions with negative funding, where shorts are actually footing the bill.

Open Interest Still Skews Bitcoin and Ether

Capital committed to derivatives remains heavily concentrated at the top: BTC open interest sits at roughly $2.75 billion and ETH at about $1.9 billion, dwarfing SOL's $407.9 million and XRP's $238.1 million. Further down the list, INJ's open interest is just $10.1 million and TIA's $2.75 million — thin books where the double-digit funding-adjusted swings are easier to produce and easier to unwind.

What It Means

A Greed reading of 65 alongside broad-based red prints in the altcoin derivatives market is not necessarily contradictory — it can reflect a market still confident in the majors while punishing weaker, thinner-book alts. But positive funding rates persisting through declines in names like INJ, SUI, and APT suggest longs haven't capitulated yet. If BTC's tight $77,867–$79,566 range breaks to the downside, that positioning is exactly the kind that gets flushed hardest.
