Fear & Greed Hits 73 as BTC, SOL, XRP All Slide in Tandem

VVWritten & audited by Vlad Ventura

The Fear & Greed Index sits at 73 — squarely in 'Greed' territory — yet not a single major asset in this dataset is green. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, and BNB are all lower on the day, a mismatch that's worth more attention than the headline sentiment number suggests.

24-Hour Snapshot

BTC: $79,585 (-0.8%) — range $78,916.67–$81,450

ETH: $2,504.88 (-0.2%) — range $2,477.32–$2,535.56

SOL: $105.76 (-3.1%) — range $104.00–$110.61

XRP: $1.4195 (-2.3%) — range $1.4018–$1.474

DOGE: $0.08697 (-2.4%) — range $0.08564–$0.09033

BNB: $705.90 (-0.8%) — range $702.90–$718.50

Fear & Greed Index: 73 (Greed)

Bitcoin's slip is the shallowest of the group at -0.8%, holding above $79,500 after trading as high as $81,450 in the last day. Ethereum is the most stable large-cap, down just -0.2% and still trading inside a tight $2,477–$2,536 band. The real damage is further down the risk curve: Solana is off -3.1%, the worst performer among the majors tracked here, while XRP and Dogecoin are both down roughly 2.3-2.4%.

What the Funding Data Adds

Perpetual funding rates give a cleaner read on positioning than spot price alone. Bitcoin's funding rate sits at 0.000086 and Ethereum's at 0.0001 — both mildly positive, meaning longs are still paying to stay long even through the pullback. XRP's funding rate is also positive at 0.000067. Open interest on BTC perps stands at roughly $2.76 billion and ETH at roughly $1.91 billion, sizable books that aren't showing signs of panic unwind.

The outlier: Solana's funding rate has flipped negative at -0.000067, meaning short positions are now paying longs. That's a notably different posture than BTC or ETH and lines up with SOL's -3.1% spot move — the derivatives market is leaning bearish on Solana even as sentiment elsewhere reads 'Greed.'

The Laggards Beyond the Majors

Outside the top tickers, the funding-rate dataset shows some sharper drawdowns over the last 24 hours: JTO is down -7.124%, TAO has fallen -4.912%, and OP is off -4.33%. These are meaningfully larger moves than anything in the BTC/ETH/SOL/XRP/DOGE/BNB set, and they're happening despite funding rates on all three staying positive (0.00005, 0.00005, and 0.0001 respectively) — traders aren't aggressively shorting these names even as spot bleeds, which points more toward long liquidations or profit-taking than a coordinated bearish bet.

By contrast, a handful of names are still green over the same window per the funding dataset — SOL shows +1.45%, TRX +1.301%, AVAX +0.203% — a reminder that this snapshot captures a market moving in different directions depending on the timeframe and venue being measured.

Reading the Greed Number Correctly

A 73 reading on Fear & Greed alongside a broadly red tape isn't necessarily a contradiction — sentiment indices tend to lag price action, and a market that was euphoric a day or two ago doesn't reset to 'Neutral' the moment prices tick down 1-3%. But it does mean the index should be read as a backward-looking confirmation of recent strength rather than a forward signal right now. The funding data is arguably more useful in this window: BTC and ETH longs are still comfortable enough to keep paying a premium, while SOL's flip to negative funding is the one place where the derivatives market has genuinely changed its mind.

For traders watching for the next directional cue, the pairing to track is simple — does Bitcoin's funding rate stay positive while price holds above the $78,900 low, or does it start compressing toward flat the way Solana's already has. That divergence, not the Fear & Greed headline, is where the next move is likely to show up first.
